What we can offer is the checklist we used when we designed our own range, and a straight answer on where each of our towels fits, and where they don't. Every towel we sell gets tested the unglamorous way: daily swims on Sydney's Northern Beaches, sandy car boots, school-morning wash cycles. If it doesn't survive that, it doesn't make the range.

What to look for in a sand-free beach towel
Five things matter more than the print. Here's how to judge each one.
Weight (gsm)
GSM means grams per square metre, and it tells you how dense the fabric is. Around 300gsm is properly light: it packs small and suits travel, gym bags and kids who carry their own gear. Midweight towels feel more substantial underneath you on the sand and stand up to heavy rotation. Heavier isn't automatically better, though: it means a bulkier bag and a slower dry.
Absorbency and drying time
A good sand-free towel should dry you properly after a swim, then dry itself before the next one. The flat weave used in sand-free towels holds far less water in the pile than looped cotton terry, which is why ours dry in about half the time of a regular towel. If a brand won't talk about drying time at all, that's usually your answer.
Size
Check the stated dimensions, not the product photos. A full-size adult towel should be around 160 × 80cm, long enough to lie on without your feet in the sand. Buying for two people, or for the family base-camp situation? One XL beats carrying three regulars.
Materials and recycled content
Most sand-free towels are polyester or a poly blend; the question worth asking is where that polyester comes from. If sustainability matters to you, look for specifics (bottle counts, certifications) rather than a vague green leaf on the packaging. The extras: carry pouch and everyday practicality
A carry pouch sounds like a nice-to-have until you own one. It keeps the wet towel off the car seat and clips to a bag. Also worth checking: does it wash in a normal machine load, and does it come in colours you'll still like next summer?
What about other brands?
Plenty of brands make a decent sand-free towel. Tesalate largely put the category on the map in Australia, and you'll find options in surf shops and on marketplaces at every price point. We're not going to tell you they don't work.

Yes. The flat weave doesn't trap sand grains the way looped cotton pile does, so dry sand brushes off with a shake. Wet sand needs a second shake, but the difference against a regular towel is obvious from the first use.
